Scoutmasters! SPLs! Crew Leaders and Advisors! Den Leaders!

Camping and hiking has been an essential element of Scouting since its inception. It provides an amazing experience that offers countless days of activities, adventures, and memories year around.

In this 100th year of Scouting, our council's Order of the Arrow members - Kola Lodge #464 - have taken on a project to create a new Where To Go Camping Guide and to make it accessible to every troop, crew, pack, and team within Longs Peak Council. Our goal is to provide a reference tool for every unit's leadership to use when planning its monthly outings, a tool that will provide all the information your leaders need to offer your youth members some variety in their outdoor program and experience.

As you can imagine, this is a monumental undertaking and one that our lodge members cannot do by themselves. It will require input from all of the units. By each unit sharing its knowledge of some of the best camping locations and hiking trails, we can create a guide that will improve the outdoor experience of all our youth, including those in your own unit.

The goal for this project: 100 camping and hiking locations on Scouting's 100th Anniversary. Think about it: detailed information about 100 or more of the best camping and hiking locations, along with our own council camps, many of them your unit will not have experienced before, from which to plan it annual outdoor program and all in one reference guide.

We have two different input forms: one for campgrounds and other camping locations, the other for hiking and backpacking trails. The forms can be filled in electronically and then emailed to my project adviser, Karl Kaszuba, at kaszuba.karl@gmail.com, or if you prefer, print out the pdf form, fill it out, and give it to your OA chapter adviser at Roundtable. We'd also appreciate any photos you can provide of the locations you submit and although it is completely optional, we'd like to give credit to the contributors (youth contributors will only be identified by first name and last initial). Please have all your input to us not later than August 1, 2010, so we can distribute the guide in time for our council camporee. Please complete a separate form for each location you submit and provide as much of the information about it as you can. The more complete the information, the more useful it is for everyone.

Remember, if we all contribute, we all benefit. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Yours in Scouting's Service,

Allan Brown Lodge Chief, Kola Lodge #464 Order of the Arrow
