| Laramie Peak | Sunny and Cool! Freezing at night! | Forecast |
Camp Laramie Peak was purchased in 1920 by a group of volunteers wanting a place to take Scouts in the wilderness. The rugged terrain, rambling brooks, and mountain backdrop was the ideal location.
Camp Laramie Peak is located northwest of Wheatland, Wyoming, near the base of Laramie Peak, in the Medicine Bow National Forest. The elevation at the Camp is approximately 6800 feet, which means we have cool evenings and mornings. Our temperatures during camp range from the 40's at night to the 90's during the day.
Scouts may work toward the completion of the following merit badges during their week in camp: camping, emergency preparedness, first aid, orienteering, pioneering, forestry, environmental science, mammal study, space exploration, weather, fly fishing, archery, rifle shooting, basketry, leatherwork, and woodcarving.
In addition to the merit badges, there is a first year camper program
for new Scouts, Rock Climbing, a Mountain Man program and a 50-Miler program.
Other Scout programs include volleyball, open crafts, open shooting, conservation projects, and commissioner assistance with rank advancement. Other camp activities include mountain biking, rock climbing, Order of the Arrow Day, Black Mountain Fire Tower Overnighter, and much more!
Note - there is no horse program at CLP in 2008.
The Mountain Man program is a week-long experience for Scouts who are
at least 1st Class and 14 years of age when they arrive at camp. The Scouts
eat breakfast in the dining hall, and then spend the remainder of the day
in the Mountain Man camp, before returning to the troop campsite at night.
Some meals may be cooked in the Mountain Man camp, the way it was done
in the 1800's. This program offers experiences the Mountain Man would have
lived almost two hundred years ago. It includes tracking, black powder
shooting (muzzle loading), fire building with flint and steel, Dutch oven
cooking, identification of wild edible plants, tomahawk throwing, and a
Colter's Run. Merit Badges offered in Mountain Man camp include cooking,
Indian lore, wilderness survival, and metal work.
This program has an additional fee of $30 per Scout.
50-Miler program
The 50-Miler program is an all week hike through forest land, and some
ranch land. Each
Scout must be at least a 1st Class Scout and be 14 years of age when he
arrives at camp. This is a backpacking challenge with rugged terrain, lots
of miles (approximately 85) and a short time frame (4 days).
The hikers will leave camp mid-morning on Monday, and return to camp
mid-afternoon on Friday. Each hiker will carry his personal gear, as well
as food, cooking and camping equipment, and any other necessities for the
trip. There is an additional fee of $30 per Scout for this program.
Interested in earning the BSA 50-Miler Award? Here's the 50-Miler application form which also lists the requirements. (See page 2 of the form).
Rock Climbing Program
Scouts will also have the opportunity to participate in the Rock Climbing Program. This program will provide basic instruction for new climbers and more advance instruction for thowe with some experience.
Adult leaders are invited to participate in a number of special programs and training sessions during their stay:
