Camp PatiyaSummer / Winter Camping Season 2006-2007On behalf of the camping committee and staff of camp Patiya, we would like to welcome you to the 2006-2007 camping season. There are some new changes that have happened at Camp Patiya.Camp SitesWe are currently setting up camp sites by name. This is being done to help you choose the right camp site for your troop or pack. This will allow more than one troop or pack to use the camp at a time. Each camp site has a picnic table, a fire pit and a waste water pit and is listed with the number of people/tents they will hold. If you need to use more than one site, you can ask for them at the time you reserve your site. Remember FIRST come, FIRST serve. The camp can handle about 65 Scouts. This does not count for adults or leaders. If your group is this large then CAR POOLING is a must. The camp's parking lot is not very large and parking on the side of the road is discouraged. If you have a large group and you're the first on the list, the camp will be closed to any other groups.
Waste Water PitsEach camp site now has a waste water pit. They are a 6" pipe with a screen on them. Waste water, soap water, grease is dumped into these pipes and is filtered into the soil. After dumping the water, please remove any left over food or trash from the screen and replace the wood top. Do not put trash or food down the pipes. Please teach scouts not to stand on, pull up or kick the pipes. Waste Water pits are not toilets - use the latrines or the rest rooms.
Fire PitsEach fire pit may be used for firewood or charcoal.Use with caution:
Free Standing Charcoal PitsUSE ONLY CHARCOAL in these, NO FIREWOOD!!!!!!!!!Campfire RingPlease don't build fires higher than you're willing to sit and watch go out. A 3' stack of wood will give you 8' flames and at least 3 hrs of burning. The camp fire ring is located SW of the cook shed on the hill. Most of the time the wind is blowing strong enough to blow the hot ashes all over the camp. You will need a bucket of water and a shovel to ensure that the fire is out. You will also need to take the ashes with you when you leave the camp. Think First, most Cub programs last about 45 min at the most - build a 40 min fire.DO NOT build your own fire rings in the camp sites or any other part of the camp. You will be fined and BANNED from ALL council camps!!!! Fire WoodUse fire wood from slash piles. It's very dry and needs to be burnt.FIRE BANSWe work with the State of Colorado, Boulder County and Cherry Vale Fire Department. The high country received a lot of snow this year, but Camp Patiya DID NOT, fire bans are now in place at the camp, this can change on a daily basis and we check before each weekend to see if we can lift the ban. If a ban is in effect, a notice will be posted at the bulletin board at the main gate and at Nancy Nixon Lodge.During a fire ban, the only fires allowed in the campsites are gas or propane fuels. Charcoal may be used at Nixon Lodge or at the cook shelter on the hill if weather allows it. The fire department will issue fines for fires in the camp during a fire ban. Campfire NotificationBefore having a camp fire, you must call:
FacilitiesRest Rooms / ShowersThe rest rooms and shower are open during the summer months. Yes the water is back on. The utility room is open year round. In order to access the doors you will need to check out the keys at the scout office. If you use the rest rooms, it is your responsibility to clean them before you leave, we will have cleaning supplies in the utility room along with toilet paper. Please clean sinks, toilets, showers and the floor, empty all trash cans and take all trash with you. FOLLOW POSTED INSTRUCTIONS IN UTILITY ROOM for turning on the well and hot water heater, also on shutting them off.LatrinesThe latrines are open year round. During snow season, you will need to clear away the snow from the doors in order to open the doors, use care not to remove the gravel under the snow.DO NOT throw trash or unburnt fire wood into the latrines. Trash and fire wood cannot be removed by the pumps and have to be cleaned out by hand, In the fall of 2005, it cost the camp more than 500 dollars to remove trash bags, cans, pop bottles, firewood and stuff you do not wish to hear about. A normal cleaning should have cost about 150.00. This extra cost could have been used to better projects than this. You can find toilet paper in the common room in Nixon Lodge and in the utility room at the bath house. We are aware of the odor and are working on the problem. Please wash the area around the toilet seats with clean water from the utility room. Nancy Nixon LodgeYou may check out Nixon Lodge on a first come basis. This includes the cook shelter on the side of the building. The common room is open to use by all using the camp for it has the phone. Please do not leave food in the refrigerator unless there are things that are not yours. The fire place insert is going to be removed and a standard grate will be installed. DO NOT build large fires in the fire place. Clean and remove all ashes with you when you leave. Be a good scouter and replace the fire wood that you use unless the weather prohibits safe cutting of the wood. Remember to use the wood from the slash piles first. Clean all tables, chairs, and counter tops. Return them to where you found them. Do not remove benches from the Lodge in order to make more room. Sweep the floor and mop up any spills. You will be charged a fee if the camp staff has to clean up after you. A Frame/ Order of the Arrow QuartersWe are completing the construction of the inside of this building. We hope to have new insulation and drywall installed before winter. We have already installed new doors and windows in order to keep the cold out. In the summer, the A frame is for OA camp staff use. This is where they base out of when doing camp staff activities. During winter season, the A-frame is open to camping on a first come bases. The A frame has a refrigerator and uses an oil filed radiator to heat the building. Please follow posted instructions in the building for its use. The A frame is for sleeping usage only, not for playing games in.Storage AreasStorage areas are located next to the cook shelter, above Nixon Lodge, and under the A-Frame. Only camp staff and training staff have access to these areas. If there is something that is needed from storage, contact the ranger or staff before going to camp.Axe YardThere will be two axe yards built in the camp - one will be just east of the bath house, the other will be up by the fire ring. Follow all axe yard safety rules.Plan AheadKeysThe keys are located at the Reichenberg Service Center in Lafayette. You will only be given the keys that you need. You must have all the forms filled out and a deposit placed before the office can give you the keys. Only one set of keys per group. If you do not pick up the keys you need before you go to camp, you may have to wait for a ranger or a staff member to let you in. Be prepared, get the key before the office closes.DepositsYou must place a deposit on the camp even if you're not using any of the buildings. We do not wish to keep your deposit but you will lose it if the ranger or staff have to clean up, haul out or repair anything that your unit fails to do. If camp property is removed you will lose your deposit and may be billed for additional charges. It is the Leader's duty to make sure that the camp is as good or better than the way you found it. THAT'S SCOUTING!DamageWe understand things get damaged, broken, fall apart and anything else that can happen and it may not be your fault. Please report all problems to the office or ranger as soon as possible. We will get them fixed as fast as possible.SafetyWeather / EmergenciesLightning - all units report to Nixon Lodge.Forest Fires - Be prepared to move fast, follow camp staff or fire departments orders in leaving camp. Contact the CAMP RANGER as soon as you are safely out of the danger zone. Medical- dial 911, address is listed at front gate (7022 Flagstaff RD) - the fire department has keys to all gates. DO NOT BLOCK ACCESS TO THE ROAD INTO THE CAMP. No over night parking at Nixon Lodge allowed by training staff. Unload and return you vehicle to parking lot..
Troops must have one trained scout master at camp at all times.
Guide to Safe Scouting PoliciesAs with all LPC Camps, we do not allow firearms, fireworks, hunting, alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, swords, sheath knifes, or PETS!!! Do not bring dogs to Camp Patiya. If you do bring your dog, you will be asked to leave and your Troop/Pack can and will be banned from further usage of the camp. (Exceptions, working dogs for the handicap.)Leaders - It is YOUR job to advise your groups. No pets (dogs, cats or otherwise) are allowed in any of the Longs Peak Council Camps. Lions, Tigers and BearsThere are all kinds of wildlife (both four legged and two) passing by, in and over the camp. They live here, we do not. Teach all kids to respect the wildlife - don't feed or leave food where they can get to it. No food in tents! Mountain lions and black bears like Tiger Cubs the best.Remember as with all Longs Peak Council Camps, Safety first, then FUN. These camps belong to the scouts, we just watch over them. EquipmentGamesThere are games for the scouts to play with at camp, please make sure that they are returned to Nixon Lodge when finished playing. The games are donated and if taken from camp or are lost, they will not be replaced.Fishing PolesThere are fishing poles and tackle for use at Gross Reservoir. The reservoir is located 2 miles south of the camp and is a great spot to take your kids. You'll find the rods in the phone room at Nixon Lodge. Please fill out the check out / check in form and report anything that needs repaired so that they will be ready for the next group.Remember that State of Colorado fishing rules and regulations apply! Need A Project to Do?Contact the Camp Ranger before going to camp. He has lots of good things that can be done by troops/packs.Thank you from the Camp Patiya Committee, Staff and Rangers
